About the WLU Debating Society

The WLU Debating Society is Laurier's Waterloo campus debate club. We hold meetings weekly and attend tournaments regularly. To join, all you have to do is participate by coming out to our meetings! You do not need any previous debating experience, and are welcomed to attend any time throughout the year. At our meetings, an experienced member of the club will give a brief debating lesson, and you will be able to participate in practice rounds.

Several of our members who joined debate in their third or fourth years consistently say that they have one regret; not joining debate earlier. We'd love to see you at our meetings, and we are confident that you will have a great time! Debate truly has something for everyone, and this is reflected in the diverse groups of Laurier students that show up to our meetings.

Being part of the WLUDS has significant benefits. Debating is an excellent skill to learn; it is among the most effective ways to improve your public speaking, critical thinking abilities, and its also a lot of fun! We attend tournaments in Canada, the US, and the annual World Championships! See our about page to check out where we've been so far. Overall, being a debater gives you the opportunity to improve your skills, travel, and meet new people (at Laurier and from all over the world)!

To apply for a tournament, just go to the Tournament Application Form and fill out the application. Take a look at our tournament list to find one that interests you, and fill out the form with the relevant information.
